Business Reviews

Senator Lyle Hillyard - He is co-chair of the Sales Tax Reform committee and went through sales tax in Utah and the challenges of the reform process. All income tax goes to public education while sales tax is funneled to the general fund. Only 34% of sales are taxable because we do not tax services. The dilemma is that sales tax needs to be fixed or we will have budget imbalances over the next few years. The trick is to expand the tax base while lowering rates. Some possibilities are to tax professional services, increase rates with an exemption for lower income families, changing exemptions or changing the allocation through a constitutional amendment. Watch and see the process over the next few months leading to the legislative session.
